Good To Know Tips
WagLovePets – Good To Know: Tips & Suggestions for At-Home Care
1. Regular Brushing Makes a Huge Difference
Even a few minutes of brushing at home can dramatically improve coat health. Prevents tangles, distributes natural oils, reduces shedding, and keeps your dog more comfortable between grooms.
2. Keep Eyes, Ears & Paws Clean (Safely)
Use a soft cloth to gently wipe eye areas, keep paws dry, and check ears weekly. Avoid cotton swabs, scissors, or risky DIY methods. Let us know if something seems off.
3. Bathing at Home: Keep It Simple
Use lukewarm water, gentle pet shampoo, and rinse thoroughly. Avoid human shampoo and air drying curly coats. For heavy shedders or mat-prone dogs, our in-between bath service may be best.
4. Keep Nails Short for Better Comfort
Most dogs need nail trims every 3–4 weeks. Short nails support joint health and reduce slipping.
5. Matting Happens — But You Can Prevent It
Brush before and after baths, use detangle spray, and pay attention to armpits, behind ears, and harness areas. Remove harnesses or clothing at home to avoid friction.
6. Help Your Dog Have a Great Grooming Day
Let dogs potty before drop-off, share any health updates, and arrive on time. Avoid feeding full meals immediately before grooming. A calm dog grooms better and is safer.
7. Senior Dogs & Special Needs Pets
Older pets may benefit from express grooming, non-slip surfaces, regular nail trims, and shorter sessions. We tailor care to your dog’s needs.
8. Shedding: What’s Normal & What Helps
Brush regularly, use vet-approved omega fatty acids, and schedule de-shedding treatments. Contact your vet if shedding increases suddenly.
9. Healthy Skin = Healthy Coat
Support skin health with hydration, balanced diet, and allergy management. Avoid over-bathing. Tell us about any itching or redness so we can choose the right products.
10. Dogs Thrive With Routine
Consistency helps dogs feel safe and relaxed. Keep regular grooming intervals, add in-between baths, pre-book for holidays, and let your pet become familiar with multiple team members.
11. What NOT to Do at Home
Avoid scissor-cutting mats, shaving double-coated breeds, using human hair dryers, or trying unsafe DIY grooming hacks. When unsure, ask us.
12. When to Contact Us or Your Vet
Contact us for coat concerns, tangles, mild irritation, or grooming questions. Contact your vet for persistent itching, hair loss, lumps, ear discharge, or pain.
13. When an In-Between Bath Helps Most
Great for active dogs, curly coats, heavy shedders, and maintaining cleanliness between full grooming visits. Makes grooming easier and more comfortable.
